Understand the different types of cofffee drinks at Kafei

At Kafei, we are known for our exceptional fluffy pancakes, our not-so traditional brunch and our quest to bring Asian flavors to Brussels! BUT we are also known for our specialty coffee… Let us guide you through our coffee drinks instead of just asking for a “normal coffee please” (and learn some italian ..)

Espresso-based drinks

1.Espresso

The espresso is the most classic, everyone knows it, though for those who do not: it is the foundation for many drinks, it is a concentrated form of coffee made by forcing hot water through finely-ground coffee beans. It is, just as the name, an express coffee and is 30ml.

2. Doppio

The doppio is simply a double shot of espresso which gives a 60ml drink. (Btw Doppio means double in Italian..)

3. Americano

The americano is made with espresso and topped with hot water. It is ideal for those that love the taste of coffee but find it a little bit too strong. Americano is a diluted version of the espresso without diluting it with milk (for those that are on a diet..)

4. Macchiatto

Macchiatto is a double shot of espresso to which have been added a small amount of steamed milk. Macchiatto means stained or spotted in reference to the milk spot on the espressos. It is still very strong in coffee but with a touch of creaminess.

Milk-based drink

Latte vs Cappuccino vs Flat White

Those 3 drinks share the same composition but in different quantities, coffee-steamed milk-foam.

The Latte consist of a double shot of espresso ( 1/3 of your drink) and the rest is steamed milk with a thin layer of foam. It is served in a 240ml cup. A latte typically has a milder flavor in terms of coffee, which is perfect for people that like coffee but not too strong.

The Cappuccino is made with one espresso, it is served in a smaller cup than a latte, usually between 150ml and 180ml. It is an equal part of coffee, steamed milk and foam which makes it perfect for people that would like a good balance between coffee and milk.

The Flat white is made with a double shot of espresso and less milk than a latte, which makes it stronger in terms of coffee flavor. It is typically served in the same size cup than a cappuccino.

In short, the three have the same composition but its drinkers are 3 different profiles of coffee lovers, each satisfy a different need!
